Close But No Cigar (update: Cigar!)

Posted by sirjeffofshort - January 9th, 2009

Update 1-9-09: Holy Crap! We made 9th in the comp. I am absolutely thrilled. Tom (the glorious man that he is) filled in the last two slots in the top ten and we were awarded 9th place! Thanks so much to everyone on NG and to everyone who voted and supported us. I decided to leave my first paragraph of my original post below so that (as if anyone cared) people could see what Luis and Tom were responding to. Thanks again to Tom and everyone on NG.

Oh well, who wants a cigar anyways?

Haha, the Christmas results are out (as I'm sure you know because anyone here is more likely to read Tom's post before mine, but I digress) and I think that Sketched placed fairly favorably. Sure no winnings were in order, but I think as first runner up we put up a damn good fight for not having made front page (of course that's a double edged sword, because if we had made front page more people may have hated our submission... Doh!)

Anyways, onwards and upwards. The Sketched January release is well underway and with ease the best looking of all the sketched cartoons to date. This is in a large part due to the hard work of SmirkStudios who put a tremendous amount of time and effort into doing the backgrounds for our new cartoon. He added a lot of great detail that I am usually to strapped for time (and lazy) to add to the backgrounds and I couldn't be more thankful.

As a bit of a trade off the Sketched crew also did voice work for his new cartoon "Teen Pijinz" which should be out in early February. So keep an eye out at the end of January and early February for more amazing content from the Sketched crew and Smirk Studios.

As a side note I would also like to mention that we at Noreasta Productions (the purveyors of Sketched) are in no way opposed to working with others on ours or their cartoons. Although I do not have much extra time to help with animation, if anyone is looking for voices we are more than glad to lend a helping hand, and if anyone would like to get in on animating a Sketched episode by all means drop me a PM (just please make sure that you have work of your own to show) because we have more skits recorded than I could ever animate on my own.

I will leave you fine people with a bit of concept art from our next cartoon over which to speculate and bemuse yourselves. This is my original concept art and does not contain Smirk's background (which is much better than my own.)

Till next time, keep on rockin NG.

-Jeff

I think you have a great style and nice craft. Its just a matter of time till you get yours. I wouldnt let the comp. spoil your dinner.

Nice work.

Thanks man, I wasn't feeling TOO down about the comp. I tend to try and keep a positive outlook on most things and I am more happy than anything that on Newgrounds my work has been seen by more people than it would have been anywhere else, plus we have gotten tremendous amounts of feedback from the fantastic NG community. I'm glad you like our style though. Thanks again for the support and kind words.

FORGET THAT GUY LUIS, you actually ended up in 9th after the post update. :)

Wow! Thanks so much man. I honestly wasn't bummed as I had figured that we were technically ranked 11th and you had already been more than generous with the awards. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I've been logging on to NG since I was in High School (not too long after it was created I believe) and it still has the best user community and staff of any site on the internet. It's a great place to get your work seen and a fun community to be a part of. Thanks again!

pity about the runner upping(?) next time will be better, IT WILL
im after luis...heeeeeeee

Now I feel like an idiot for posting a bit of a pre-mature concession speech. Oops. We came in ninth thanks to Tom and NG's overwhelming generosity. Thanks for the support and the vote of confidence. We are gonna work even harder to keep on making quality cartoons in the future, so keep an eye out.

U won! Are you happpy now. Do you have ur cigar

I do, but I don't smoke so it will probably just sit there and get stale... haha. My statement was meant more to be a amiable concession than an annoying whine session, so I hope it didn't come off that way. There were SO many great entries this year to even be a part of the contest was an honor. Your entry in particular blew me away when I first viewed it.

I wouldn't worry too much.

If you're feeling down then Newgrounds offers plenty of opportunities for flash artists to be rewarded. Even as we speak a Street Fyter collab is being organized and I've gotta feeling everyone who takes part is gonna find themselves with a couple of extra awards!
I may even take part myself, it's about time I flexed my artistic glands.

Springer's Final Thought:

We all want to succeed in life, whether that be in school, relationships or work.
But sometimes we may feel overlooked and it can seem that our best efforts have been in vain.
But thank to Newgrounds Street Fhiyter collab we all have a chance to be loved!

Until next time, take care of yourself...

...and each other!

AAAAAhahahaha. What a fantastic comment! Jerry is the man.

I do still feel like a bit of an idiot because my post may have been taken as a "Why no win?" Whine fest, but what I really wanted to emphasize was how happy I was with how well we actually did, well that and the updates on how our new cartoon was coming along.

I'm not much one for collabs and awards are nice but it's not exactly the reason I'm in this, but the street fighter collab does seem interesting. I'll surely have to keep an eye out for it.

Thanks for the comment.

Tom you faggot. way to piss on my parade.

You are my all time favorite conversation writer... they can't be beat!

That looks so good. I can't imagine what humor will be in this one man. well I can't wait.

Right now though there are so many ideas I have, so many callabs and contests I wana Join. That includes helping with one of your sketches. But, I'm stuck on this one movie I said I was gona do. I swear after this I'm only making shorts. That way I won't get so tired of what I'm doing.
